If you’re anything like me you’re still wrapping your head around the fact that 2018 is just days away. For better or for worse, 2017 just seemed to fly by. 2017 was a year of some major life milestones for me; I turned the big 40, celebrated 15 years of wedded bliss, became an auntie for the third time and marked my 10 year anniversary as a physical therapist. While I didn’t get to travel as frequently as I would have liked this year, with family events taking priority over personal trips in the beginning of the year and a surgery in November keeping me grounded for the past 6 weeks, the trips I did take made for some absolutely memorable experiences. As I finish up my recovery and planning adventures for 2018 I wanted to take a look back at some of my favorite moments from 2017.
Most Romantic Weekend Getaway
With a prime position on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, the small town charm of St. Michaels and the understated luxury that is the hallmark of the Belmond brand, the Inn at Perry Cabin was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary.
Best Spa Experience
With a gorgeous private relaxation area, expertly skilled therapists and a 9-jet shower (it really is life-changing folks), Spa Avania at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale is easily the best spa I’ve ever been to.
Best Horseback Ride With A View
The best way to view Colorado’s stunning Rocky Mountain scenery? By horseback, of course. Located an hour from Breckenridge the small group rides at the Rusty Spurr Ranch offer stunning mountain views at 9,600 feet.
Best Food City
While Austin is known for some of the best BBQ in the country, it’s creative spirit makes it one of the United State’s great food cities.
Most Unusual Bite
On a food tour in Marrakech I got to sample mechoui, succulent whole roasted sheep baked in underground ovens. As a guest I was offered one of the most prized parts of the sheep- the eyeball. I couldn’t say no, could I?
Best Meal
Chef Jerry Trice’s elegant yet unfussy plates at Gunther & Co is worth trip to Baltimore and my favorite meal of 2017.
Best Pastry
Fact- it is impossible to go to Portugal and not eat your weight in pastel de nata.
Best Art City
You may know Washington for history and politics but from murals to interactive art galleries DC has a creative side that will surprise you.
Best Boutique Hotel-US
Marrying service, smart design and a big dose of fun the Maven Hotel was a highlight of my trip to Denver.
Best Boutique Hotel-International
When visiting Marrakech a stay in a riad (a traditional Moroccan home centered around an outdoor courtyard) is a must. Riad Farnatchi provided a luxurious respite from the hustle of Marrakech.
Best Hike
The hike from the Azzeden Valley to Imlil in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco left me amazed at the people who have thrived in this unforgiving, but beautiful landscape. I’ll be writing about this trek more in depth soon.
Best Sky High View
I finally got to cross riding in a hot air balloon off my bucket list, my experience soaring over the Sonoran Desert with Hot Air Expeditions in Phoenix was absolutely thrilling.
The Surprise Hit
If you’re only exposure to Baltimore is “The Wire”, you’re in for a surprise. I have a soft spot for former industrial cities and I found in Baltimore a city full of quirky charm, grit and creativity.
Favorite New Country
Everyone who has visited Portugal raves about it and you can add me to that list. With stunning architecture, a relaxed vibe and amazing food Portugal was a place I immediately fell in love with.
