Love this post! I’ve been traveling to Mexico for over twenty years and all my experiences were similar to yours. Though I’d love to learn how to make chiles en nogada – what a tasty dish! I love Mexico, epsecially its people. It is one of the friendliest places on the planet. The violence veryone warns you about … of course it’s there, I’m sure, but mostly in the big resort areas – money or the illusion of it attracts crime. And, jus tlike everywhere else, it makes the headlines. I’m glad you posted this, so more people learn that Mexico is just like another foreign country, with its good and bad, but mostly friendly, colorful and warm.

We are in Mexico now, with a toddler, and we just love it! It’s a shame that people are so ignorant and stick to old misconceptions about lots of destinations in Central & South America!

I really loved this post. Anything that is raw and honest, highlighting obvious travel safety precautions but not letting hit hinder you from enjoying the local life. The food looks amazing. I dont think I’ve ever had mexcal… I am curious though – orange and red pepper, I love the sweet and spicy

I had much the same reaction when I said I was traveling to Mexico City at New Years, my mother freaked! Had no problems at all, although we were told by some locals we met that at other times of the year it can be quite dangerous. But I think anywhere is if you don’t apply common sense!

Thanks for this post. Friends of ours moved to Mexico recently and we had thought about going to visit them, then spending some time sight seeing in Mexico City and some other areas. However, we had heard people talking about feeling unsafe in Mexico City so we haven’t planned the trip yet. This post makes me feel a lot better about going. I know most of the negative press about Mexico is very exaggerated, but it’s always hard to know how much.

I loved Mexico when I was there, even though I had a few not so great things happen. It certainly wouldn’t deter me from going back. Bad things can happen anywhere! So awesome that you ignored the concerns (except the water one cause that’s legit) and enjoyed your time. Being greeted with a margarita is a pretty great way to start a trip!

Yes! Thank you! I love Mexico and can happily say I’ve never been to Cancun, Cozumel, etc, etc. Mexico City is amazing, and I can’t wait to go back. I got the same warnings, and one night, when I set up my SLR and tripod at a busy intersection in Polanco, I giggled knowing people back home would DIE knowing I’m walking around Mexico City at night, with my camera! I can’t wait for another trip to Mexico 🙂

Love your post! And I have also had similar warnings given to me, along with looks of amazement, disgust or confusion as to why I would want to travel to Mexico with my family. We haven’t been yet but plan to next year, as all I hear from people who have actually been there are great things! We can’t wait to go!
