Well, it’s the end of August and another summer is just about in the books. I don’t know about you but this summer went by way too fast for my liking. I’ve got a few more beach days up my sleeve (never enough though) and pumpkin spice season is on the horizon (I refused to acknowledge the PSL anytime before October 1).
I started August in Washington DC ( one of my favorite cities that just keeps getting better) meeting up with a few of my favorite travel blogging pals to explore the creative side of DC. For as many times as I’ve been to the capital I found I was treated to a bevy of galleries, experiences and restaurants that were new to me. Overall it was a weekend full of fun, laughter and some seriously good eats.

A week later I was jetting off to visit family in Illinois and Wisconsin with my brother, his wife and their adorable 4 month old baby girl. Air travel often gets a bad rap but I think it’s important to highlight when things go right. On this flight my group of four got a complimentary upgrade to Economy Plus, I observed the United flight crew buying military members a meal in O’Hare and saw several people happily exchange seats so a mother and her young daughter could sit together. I think there is a lot more good going on in air travel and I thinks it’s time we start sharing that.
Richmond, Illinois is a place I’ve never lived but always feels like home. No matter how long my visit here is it’s never long enough. Days spent catching up with my large extended family that I don’t see nearly often enough are punctuated with afternoons at nearby Lake Geneva, Wisconsin( a quintessential summer lake town if there ever was one) and catching the beginning of apple season(and running through the country’s largest apple maze) at Royal Oak Farms.
Back home in Virginia Beach I’ve had several friends who have wanted to try stand up paddleboarding. It is hands down my favorite summertime activity in Virginia Beach and with miles of coastline alone the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake along with countless inlets this place was made for paddleboarding. While I’ve been paddling for years( I even have my own board) this was a first time for everyone else so I rang up my friend Randy at Rudee Inlet SUP to set up a morning tour. Within minutes Randy had our crew up on their feet gliding across Rudee Inlet and later on braving a few yoga poses. I think the smiles say it all.
