It’s fall ya’ll. October is one of my favorite months, the trees are ablaze in color and I’m happy to trade in my sundresses for boots and scarves. Flannels and leggings become my weekend uniform and I’m slightly less judgmental about your choice to drink a pumpkin spice latte. As far as I’m concerned October is one of the best months to travel just about anywhere and over the past several years I’ve visited Austria, Lisbon and Marrakech; so it should come as no surprise that I hit the road this month. So where did I go ?
Italy!!!!!!
Italy is the one country people were always surprised I hadn’t visited so when my friend Katie of Domestiphobia moved to Italy last year I immediately started planning a trip.Truth be told I had always been a little intimidated with planning a trip to Italy because there was just so much I wanted to do. Rome and Florence are two of the world’s great cities and a must for a first foray to Italy. I then joined my friend Katie and her family in Ferrara before heading to Piemonte for the Alba White Truffle Fair. I’ll have plenty of Italy posts coming out for you guys but I wanted to share a few things I loved (as well as a few things that could have gone a little better).
In Rome we stayed in Trevestere and loved the neighborhood feel. Within an hour of arriving we found our neighborhood cafe where we started our every day with a cappuccino and a cornetto.
Our Airbnb was kind of meh. While the location was great the bed and pillows were like rocks and there was no toilet paper stocked. Even after notifying the owner it took two days for them to bring some by.
If you go to a restaurant run by an Italian nonna you will be properly outfitted for your meal.
From the Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain and on to the Vatican the tourist sites in Rome were insanely crowded. Book your tickets and tours ahead of time (I highly recommend Livitaly Tours), there will still be tons of people but you’ll save a lot of time and headaches.
Steve and I booked a Flytographer session to capture us making googly eyes at each other as we strolled through Florence.
If the opportunity to eat gelato comes up, take it.
If you find yourself in Florence be sure to take a day to get out and explore Tuscany. I can’t recommend the service from Tuscan Organic Tours enough. Stay tuned for an upcoming post 😉
Be sure to get off the well beaten tourist trail, the town of Ferrara is a charmer and I can’t wait to go back to visit Katie and explore it a bit more.
The home of wine, truffles, hazelnuts and stunning vineyard views, the Piemonte region may in fact be heaven.
Things I’m Loving
My friend Keryn from Walking On Travels offers up some great tips to help families learn how to navigate the internet and social media safely while having fun.
These ankle boots from Blondo are the complete package; cute, waterproof and go with nearly any outfit you can imagine.
Thanksgiving is coming up and you’re going to want to make this pumpkin pie with rum whipped cream from Ina Garten.
What were your highlights this October? Share them with me in the comments!
