One more September is down in the books. It’s officially fall (though with 90 degree days in the forecast coastal Virginia hasn’t quite gotten the memo), the leaves are just starting to turn and football season is in full swing. This is my favorite time of year in Virginia Beach; the tourists have gone home leaving the beaches blissfully uncrowded, the temperatures are perfect and I try to spend as much time as possible outside. I spent most of the month enjoying home but managed to get away for one weekend road trip. Let’s take a look at what I did this month.

Outdoor Adventures in Virginia Beach
I really did try to spend as much time as possible outside this month. Steve found a new-to-us local hiking trail and I love that even after living here for 20 years there’s still a lot of places to discover. Lake Lawson is a smaller municipal park in northern Virginia Beach that has a lot of similar features to First Landing State Park (the most visited state park in Virginia) and was a great place to spend a few hours on a Saturday morning. I also got together with a few friends to stand up paddle through First Landing State Park, my absolute favorite warm weather activity in Virginia Beach that I didn’t do nearly enough of this year.
Urban Adventures in Norfolk
On a Friday evening Steve and I played tourists in our own backyard and took a walking tour of Norfolk’s Neon Art District with Norfolk Tour Company. The Neon District is home to a growing number of stunning murals from both local and international artists. While I’ve visited a few restaurants in the area this tour showed me some new areas as well as exposed us to some new artists and some amazing and thought-provoking street art.
Weekend Road Trip to Easton, PA
I just returned from a weekend trip to Easton, PA meeting up with blogger and fellow Lehigh Valley native Brianne Miers of A Travelling Life. We both grew up here and graduated the same year from rival high schools and have since moved away and figured it would be great to go back and see how things in Easton have changed. Like many former manufacturing towns Easton hit a rough patch in the 90s but in the past few years artists and chefs, drawn away from New York and Philadelphia by a more relaxed pace of life and sense of community, have set up shop revitalizing downtown and beyond. I’ll have a post coming up in the next few weeks and while I’m happy to see the great changes economically and culturally I am thrilled to see that the close knit sense of community I remember growing up is as strong as ever.
