I always knew I’d like New Orleans. This is a city with a long and fascinating history, music running through its veins and some of the best food on the planet. What’s not to like? That was great and all, but there was a little something else, something I can’t quite put my finger on that made me fall hard and fast for New Orleans. There is a general laid back, easy-going vibe and a joie de vivre here that makes the Big Easy quite easy to love. So while Frank Sinatra may have left his heart in San Francisco, here are a few reasons New Orleans will always have a piece of mine.
New Orleans is a town that marches to the beat of its own drum
More than any other city I’ve visited music is woven into the soul of New Orleans. Best known as the birthplace of jazz and Louis Armstrong, New Orleans more recently has inspired decades of soul, funk, rock and hip hop artists. Street musicians of all genres can be found on nearly every corner while brass bands(along with second line revelers) accompany traditional funerals and weddings. There is a thriving live music scene and some of the best live music bars in New Orleans include TheSpotted Cat Music Club, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, and Blue Nile. I chose to get my music fix at Preservation Hall, a New Orleans institution that has been pivotal in preserving and promoting traditional jazz since 1961.
…..in more ways than one.
A mix of cultural influences have helped create one of the most distinctย cities in the US. Theย bohemian bourgeois of the Garden District, the musician on the corner of Royal and Toulouse,ย the voodoo priestess; they’re all accepted and celebrated here. New Orleans wears its identity on its sleeve and isn’t afraid to share it with you. There are so many things to do in New Orleans you’ll never get bored.
You’ll drink well
While the cocktail wasn’t invented in New Orleans as widely believed it is is the birthplace of several classic cocktails, most notably the Sazerac. This combination of rye whiskey (or bourbon), absinthe, sugar and Peychaud’s bitters was named New Orleans’ official cocktail in 2008. New Orleans has no shortage of places to enjoy a well crafted libation either, I personally recommend the Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone (which not only serves some of the best cocktails in the city but features an actual carousel-turned-bar that rotates as you enjoy your drink), the Sazerac Bar, Cure and Bar Tonique.
and eat even better.
The fact that New Orleans is a great food town is hardly a secret, but the culinary scene here stretches far beyond beignets and gumbo. Grand institutions like Commander’s Palace and Brennan’s serve up classically elevated Creole cuisine while a new wave of modernist chefs are pushing New Orleans’ culinary boundaries. Everyone know’s you can get a outstanding po’boy or muffaletta here but New Orleans also has a thriving Vietnamese population making it a great place for pho as well. Start with my recommendations here, but you definitely need to explore New Orleans’ food scene for yourself.
The architecture is amazing
New Orleans collection of unique architectural styles are reflective of its history and heritage.Spanish and French architectural styles blended with Caribbean influences resulted in the Creole style that dominates the French Quarter; this charming neighborhood is defined by narrow streets flanked by colorful townhomes laced with cast-iron balconies. Further uptown the grand mansions of the Garden District comprise the country’s largest collection of antebellum architecture.
but you’re never far from nature.
Locals and visitors alike enjoy the green spaces intown at Audubon Park (be sure to check out the Audubon Zoo, Aquarium and Insectarium while you’re in the area) and New Orleans City Park, home of the New Orleans Botanical Gardens. Don’t miss a chance to venture outside the city to explore the swamps and bayous and see the wild side of southern Louisiana.
It’s a true melting pot
Founded in 1708 New Orleans has existed under under the French, Spanish and American flags. European descended Creoles, Cajuns, African descendants, Native Americans and Afro-Caribbean immigrants have all called this city home. Rather than one dominating culture, elements from each help make New Orleans the dynamic city it is today.
that honors its past
Upon a first visit to New Orleans a famous writer once remarked “You can tell a great deal about a community by the way they honor their dead, and without meeting any of the people of New Orleans, yet I can tell you I know I’m going to like them, for very few cities that I have visited throughout the world honor the dead as they do here.” Due to the city’s location below sea level the deceased are interred above ground with some of the tombs being quite elaborate. Its not uncommon to visit one of New Orleans’ cemeteries and stumble upon someone caring for a tomb that’s been in their family for generations.
and knows how to throw one heck of a party.
New Orleanians will celebrate just about anything. Decorations and costumes come out for the traditional American holidays- Christmas, New Year’s and Holloween; but New Orleans throws one of the world’s best parties on a Tuesday each February(ever hear of a little thing called Mardi Gras?). Mardi Gras is actually the culmination of the Carnival season which starts on January 6; so if the thought of the massive crowds on Fat Tuesday scare you, get your party on during one of the many smaller parades throughout January and February. Each April some of the world’s best music acts converge in New Orleans for Jazz Fest.
Above all, the people are really what make New Orleans special.
In no other city have I felt as warmly welcomed as I did in New Orleans. Interactions with hotel and restaurant staff, whom you expect to be friendly anyway, were not forced or contrived. Impromptu conversations struck up with strangers showed a genuine interest in how I was enjoying my time in New Orleans. Most conversations regarding life in New Orleans will inevitably mention Hurricane Katrina. What you’ll also hear about is how, in the storm’s devastating aftermath, the people of New Orleans have banded together to help bring back the city that they love.

My soul live in New Orleans a do notsometimes I miss it so much I can’t breathe.

New Orleans has a way of staying with you.
Bryan says
Brianna, you absolutely nailed it with your comments. I grew up in Nola but have been living in Baton Rouge since 2005. Luckily I’m only an hour away. But it will always be home. A good friend, Eddie, has been tending bar at the Carousel for at least 20+ years now. Nola is a lot bigger than it seems because everyone that visits takes a little piece of it with them. Thank you for your kind words.
Brianna says
Brian, thank you so much for your kind words!Honestly there is no city I have fallen for so quickly, New Orleans truly is a special place.
Amy Privigyi says

I came for a 3 month stay in 2011, from Northern California and never left. I’ve now been here 4 years. The friendliness of the people and their acceptance of everyone made me stay. I feel that I fit in here better than I have anywhere else that I have lived. I love it !!
Brianna says
Molly, I’ve heard several stories similar to yours. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t feel right at home in New Orleans.
Penny says
I’d love to visit NO one day. The food, the architecture, everything – it’s just so appealing.
I didn’t know about the ‘mini carnivals’ before Mardi Gras, that’s definitely good to know – I’d really like to be there for Mardi Gras but the crazy crowds aren’t really my kind of fun.
Brianna says
I’m not in to the huge crowds either but there really is no bad time to visit New Orleans.
Casie says
New Orleans truly sounds like a fabulous place- and EVERYTHING that I look for in a city! Music, food, great people…oh, and food! I am from the states now living in Spain, and I can’t believe I have yet to visit New Orleans. As soon as I return, it is the first stateside city on my bucket list ๐

I don’t think there is any way to not fall in love with New Orleans. It is a very special city for my family and not only that, but my favorite eating city in the US. I loved staying at Hotel Monteleone and going to the Carousel bar. I liked the suggestions you gave for music choices but my one and only favorite will always be seeing Big Al Carson at Funky Pirate. I heart NOLA. ๐

Melody, I would love to visit New Orleans with you. We would totally tear it up!

This post made me smile. Thank you for reminding me of the fantastic memories I have of this wonderful place. The jazz music in the air and the easy southern atmosphere with a taste of the best jambalaya. New Orleans has it all and I’m not surprised to hear someone else fell in love with this city. I really must go back one day. Great post and stunning photos

I love New Orlean! I went last June for a work conference and to visit the Tulane School of Public Health and fell in love with the city. One of the professors told me that people either love it or hate it and not much in between. Hopefully in the near future I’ll be living there for grad school. Thanks for reminding me that I need to book another trip there.
Brianna says
Good luck with grad school! NOLA would be an awesome home base for a few years.
Erin says
I’m with you on the architecture. It’s mind-blowing. Along with the hauntingly beautiful cemeteries The statues and cherubs with their soulful little eyes….they give me shivers and somehow it all has this great vibe!.
Brianna says
Just one of the many things that makes New Orleans unique.
Tim says
New Orleans is a pretty amazing place and I love it for all the same reasons as you but also for one extra. Way back in 1991 my mother and I took a trip there. She flew over from NZ and we traveled around the US spending a healthy chunk of time in NO. We ate, visited historical landmarks, listened to great music, and soaked up the energy of the city. It is a gem.
Dana @ Green Global Travel says
New Orleans has always been on my bucket list to visit for all the reasons you mentioned. I feel like I’d love a city so immersed in its own culture and music.
Brianna says
I haven’t met anyone who didn’t love New Orleans.
The Adventure Ahead says
Another great post! New Orleans has been on our bucket list for ages. It is funny how we travel long distances to explore the world, and forget all about the places that are closer to home. With all of the great culture and history of the area, there seems so much to learn about there. All of that great architecture would also make for some great photo ops!
Jody Johnson says
I too fell in love with New Orleans. I took a solo trip there last October and soaked up the Autumn warmth and as much food and drink as I could handle. I knew I would love the food and the old homes but the city itself worked its way into my soul in a way I can’t explain. I can’t wait to return even though I have many other cities and countries on my ‘bucket list’.
Cheers,
JJ
Brianna says
I know the feeling. I’ll definitely be back to New Orleans sooner rather than later.
Samantha says
I have lived in Louisiana for 33 of the 34 years of my life. I spent nearly 2 years straight going back and forth over Lake Ponchartrain from the Northshore to the streets of New Orleans. The thing about the city, is that when you fall for New Orleans you fall hard. It was the greatest love affair of my life. And to this day, I would drop everything to visit her heady streets and haunting buildings. I live only minutes away, but it might as well be the other side of the world if I am not there. This was a great article. Thanks for sharing.
Brianna says
Samantha, thank you so much for stopping by. There is something about New Orleans that stays with you.
Gemma Two Scots Abroad says
The drink, the music, the food, the buildings, the people. You’ve cracked it. I adore NOLA. Lost two nights to that hot mess back in 2011 and dragged Craig along last March to kick of our 18 month career break. Was the best start we could have hoped for. Cheers!
Brianna says
Ah, Nola, I’m sure you have some great stories from those two nights!
Charlotte says
There is no place like NOLA, I have been in love with the city since my very first visit.
Every time I go I walk my legs off just trying to see & experience as much as possible.
I have visited probably 10 times and I know that there are still a million things I’ve yet to see.
I cry every time I leave and rejoice every time I return! New Orleans is in my soul!
Brianna says
New Orleans is a city that always stays with you isn’t it?
Noel says
Absolutely!
Patty says
I googled my love for Nola because I miss it so much. I go a few times a year and love every second I’m there. It’s my favorite city hands down. I’ll take it over NYC, Chicago, San Fran, or Boston any day. I love the food, the architecture, the vibe, the people and mostly the soul. I feel it in my bones. When I leave I count down the days that I can go back. Nola I can’t wait to see you again!
Brianna says
I instantly fell in love, there is no other city like her!
Noel says
Was so excited to visit this famous city. I Attended .Next 2018 at the The Morial Convention Center in May 2018. I traveled with other conference attendees, but also the lady i am in love with. This added to the magic of the experience, this place absolutely stole my heart. Food, history and a kind of distinct laid back atmosphere stood out. I am definitely returning. Thanks to all at Embassy suites New Orleans on Julia Street for making our stay a home away from home. Breakfast there every morning was superb. Michael from Briquette, take a bow. Thanks for making our final night there truly memorable. Mary, our Limo driver from the airport was a treasure trove of information. Very friendly city. Tableau Restaurant, simply fantastic. We also enjoyed Fogo de Chao on Canal Street. Cajun Encounters did a great job on our last day. We did the City bus tour. I am under a New Orleans spell. Keep your allure. We’ll be back!
